Recovery after Dental Implant Surgery

Orange County Dental Implants RecoveryDental implants are quickly becoming the treatment of choice for tooth replacement. Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed within a missing tooth socket of the jawbone. These posts act as artificial tooth roots to which a prosthetic tooth is attached with a connector called an abutment. Because dental implants are anchored within the jawbone, they provide the most natural looking, feeling, and functioning option in tooth replacement. We invite you to schedule a consultation at the Orange County cosmetic dentistry practice of Dr. Dao Kim Pham-Nguyen to see if dental implants are right for you.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Before dental implant surgery, your gums and jawbone will be evaluated to ensure the dental implant procedure will be successful. The jawbone will be examined to determine if there is sufficient bone tissue for implantation. When teeth are missing for an extended period of the time, the jawbone begins to change and dissolve. A bone graft may be necessary to rebuild the jaw for successful dental implant placement. Once the jawbone is healthy enough, the dental implant is placed and allowed to heal. Once healed, a custom-made artificial tooth, called a crown, is attached to the implant.

Dental Implant Recovery

Many who have had dental implant surgery equate the process to a similar pain level as a tooth extraction. Immediately following surgery, you can expect sore, tender gums and jaw. In most cases, over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to alleviate pain. Hard, crunchy foods should be avoided immediately following surgery as they can cause pain and irritation during the healing process.

The recovery process typically takes a few weeks to several months. During this time, a process called osseointegration is occurring. Osseointegration is the natural process through which the jawbone permanently bonds to the titanium dental implant. Once this process is complete, you should be fully recovered.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Of all options in tooth replacement, dental implants are the closest thing to having your own teeth back. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth to a whole set of teeth. They can even be used to attach dental bridges or to anchor dentures within the mouth. Implant-supported dentures allow wearers to eat and speak with the confidence of knowing their dentures are securely attached and will not slip like traditional dentures. For our patients in Orange County, dental implants offer some of the following benefits:

  • Improved Aesthetics: The crowns used with dental implants are custom-made for a perfect match with your surrounding teeth.
  • More Comfortable: Dental implants are comfortable since they feel and function like your own teeth.
  • Durable: With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime.
  • Increased Confidence: Dental implants will give you the confidence of a smile free of missing teeth.
  • Secure Fit: Dental implants are firmly and permanently anchored to the jaw through osseointegration.
