What are porcelain veneers?

San Diego porcelain veneers are also called as porcelain laminates or dental veneers. These are thin shells of porcelain which are bonded on the front side of the teeth in order to improve the appearance of the teeth. Today, San Diego porcelain veneers are routinely used by cosmetic dentists to correct discolored, worn, chipped and misaligned teeth.

Dentists in California have had materials which allow them to bond materials to the tooth’s enamel. This is the main technique used in San Diego porcelain veneers. Although porcelain is inherently brittle, it becomes strong and durable when bonded with a sturdy surface.

The greatest advantages of San Diego porcelain veneers come in two forms:

Porcelain veneers have a very tooth-like appearance.
In the past, dentists in California only had bonding materials which were semi-translucent in appearance. They lack the luster found in natural teeth. San Diego porcelain veneers are glass-like in nature and when bonded to the surface of the tooth’s surface, it closely mimics the characteristics of the tooth’s enamel.

Porcelain veneers resist staining.
Bonding materials which were used by dentists in the past were susceptible to staining and discoloring. This is especially true if the individual is fond of drinking coffee, tea, red wine and consuming tobacco products. Since porcelain is ceramic and glass like, its surface is extremely stain resistant.

Why use porcelain veneers?
Despite the advantages of San Diego porcelain veneers, it cannot be used in every situation. Only your dentist can determine whether it is the appropriate treatment for you or if there are other options which are more applicable for your case. Here are some situations when porcelain veneers are used.

* Correct minor tooth imperfections and defects. Teeth which have chips or whose surface is worn are often good candidates for porcelain veneers.
* Porcelain veneers can be used to cover fillings that have become stained or discolored.
* Used to make color changes for teeth which have permanent stains.
* In some cases, veneers can be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment. It can be used to close gaps in the teeth and if misalignment is not too excessive
